A FIELD NOTE BY ILLIA BITKOV SEATTLE / WASHINGTON

Seattle wedding photographer for couples who hate posing.

If “we are awkward in photos” is the first thing you want to tell your photographer, this is for you.

You do not need a catalog of poses, a practiced smile or a different personality for the camera. My job is to notice the way you already connect, give you enough direction to feel secure, and turn that into photographs with movement and intention.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW HOW TO POSE.

The strongest photographs rarely begin with “stand here and smile.” They begin with a little trust, a clear next step and enough room for you to forget about the camera.

I’m Illia Bitkov, a Washington-based photographer. I approach weddings as connected stories: the atmosphere, the people, the small gestures and the movement between the expected moments. I will step in when direction helps, then step back when the moment can carry itself.

A good wedding photographer does not ask you to become someone more photogenic. The work is to understand your rhythm and photograph it clearly. You can see more of that rhythm in my wedding stories and behind the scenes on Instagram @bitkovph.

REAL REACTION / SIMPLE DIRECTION

WHAT I DO INSTEAD OF FORCING POSES.

01

GIVE A BEGINNING

I offer one simple action—walk, turn toward each other, hold a little closer—so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look.

02

WATCH WHAT HAPPENS

The prompt is only the start. The laugh after it, the pause, the wind catching a dress and the way you naturally reset are often where the photograph becomes yours.

03

REFINE, NOT REPLACE

I adjust the light, angle or distance when it helps, without interrupting the connection. You stay recognizable; the frame becomes intentional.

FIVE WAYS TO FEEL MORE LIKE YOURSELVES.

These are small, practical shifts—not instructions for performing better.

  1. 01

    SAY WHAT FEELS AWKWARD.

Tell me what you usually dislike in photographs, what kind of touch feels natural and whether you prefer quiet direction or more energy. Clear boundaries make the session easier, not harder.

  2. 02

LOOK AT EACH OTHER, NOT FOR THE CAMERA.

Notice the person you chose: their hands, their voice, the way they react. The camera becomes less important when your attention has somewhere real to go.

  3. 03

    MOVE BEFORE YOU HOLD STILL.

Walk, breathe, shift your weight or settle into an embrace. Movement releases tension and gives your hands and posture a reason to be where they are.

  4. 04

WEAR SOMETHING THAT LETS YOU LIVE.

Choose clothes you can walk, sit and breathe in. Style matters, but comfort is what lets your actual expression return.

  5. 05

    LET THE IMPERFECT SECOND STAY.

You do not need every hair, laugh or gesture under control. The in-between moment often holds more feeling than the version you planned.

DO NOT SEARCH FOR A POSE. SEARCH FOR WHAT IS TRUE.

Before the wedding, think less about how you want to look and more about how the day should feel. Quiet? Playful? Close to family? Full of movement? That answer gives the photographs a direction that belongs to you.

Your story is already in small habits: who reaches for whose hand, what makes one of you laugh, how you calm each other down. I pay attention to those details because they are more personal than a pose copied from someone else’s wedding.

“The goal is not to look natural. It is to have enough space to be natural.”

ONE MOMENT / PART OF A FULL STORY

HOW TO CHOOSE A SEATTLE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER WHEN YOU HATE POSING.

  • Look at full stories. A photographer should be able to connect portraits, ceremony, details and atmosphere—not only show a few perfect frames.
  • Ask how direction works. “Documentary” should not mean leaving you unsupported, and “editorial” should not mean turning the day into a production.
  • Notice real variety. Look for quiet moments, movement, difficult light and groups as well as couple portraits.
  • Choose communication you trust. Feeling comfortable starts before the wedding, with clear planning and honest expectations.

WHAT COUPLES ASK ME.

What if both of us feel awkward in photos?

That is completely workable. I begin with simple actions and photograph you together rather than testing either of you as a model. We build comfort gradually and keep the direction clear.

Will you still take a few classic portraits?

Yes. Natural does not mean unstructured. We can create polished couple and family portraits while keeping the process efficient, then return to the movement and unscripted moments around them.

Do we need an engagement session first?

No. It can be useful if you want time in front of the camera before the wedding, but it is not required. The Signature collection includes an engagement session or one additional wedding-day hour as a choice.

Where do you photograph weddings?

I’m based in Washington State and photograph in Seattle and beyond. Share the location—or tell me if it is still undecided—when you inquire.
